Calculation of MB Without Chemical Reaction With Example


          In this article i am going to share with you how we can calculate Material Balance Without chemical reaction. For this please read below.

         A two stage membrane process is designed for separation of carbon monoxide from a mixture of Carbon monoxide (47% mole basis) and rest Hydrogen. The system is designed to recover 93.2% CO with 98% mole% purity. Recycle stream is kept at 5000 mol/h for a fresh feed rate of 500 mol/h. This requirement is stipulated to achieve 1.1 mole ratio of Hydrogen / Carbon monoxide in the feed to second stage. In this we will find,

1) The flow rates of product CO stream.

2) Composition of product H2 stream.



SOLUTION :

Fresh Feed F = 5000 mol/h

1) CO in fresh feed at the rate of 47% = 5000 * 0.47
                                               
                                                                = 2350 mol/h

H2 in fresh feed at the rate 53% = 2650 mol/h

CO in product stream for 93.2% recovery = 2350 * 0.932

                                                                    = 2190.2 mol/h

Product CO stream = 2190.2 / 0.98 = 2234.9 mol/h

2) H2 in CO stream = 2234.9 - 2190.2
 
                                 = 44.7 mol/h

Mole of H2 in product H2 stream = 2650 - 44.7

                                                      = 2605.3 mol/h

Moles of CO in product CO stream = 2350 - 2190.2

                                                          = 159.8 mol/h

Mole % of H2 in product H2 stream = (2605.3 / 2605.3+159.8) * 100

                                                           =94.2%

Mole % of CO in product CO stream = 100 - 94.2

                                                             =5.8%
